Device Action: Re-install SimpleMDM Munki

The Re-install SimpleMDM Munki action uninstalls and reinstalls both Munki and the SimpleMDM Agent on a Mac. This is useful for troubleshooting issues with Munki-managed app deployments, resolving agent connectivity problems, or resetting the agent to a clean state.

Supported platforms

This action is available for macOS devices that have the SimpleMDM Agent installed and at least one Munki-deployed app assigned. It is not available for iOS, iPadOS, or tvOS devices. Supervision is not required.

How to reinstall SimpleMDM Munki

  1. In SimpleMDM, navigate to the device's Device Details page.
  2. Click the "Actions" menu.
  3. Select "Re-install SimpleMDM Munki".
  4. Confirm the action when prompted.

SimpleMDM will first uninstall the existing agent and Munki, then automatically reinstall them with a fresh configuration. The process happens in the background and does not require any action from the device user.

What this action does

The reinstallation follows a multi-step process:

  1. SimpleMDM sends an uninstaller package to the device, which removes the existing SimpleMDM Agent and Munki installation.
  2. After the uninstall completes, SimpleMDM pushes an updated SimpleMDM Agent profile with a new authentication token.
  3. SimpleMDM then reinstalls the SimpleMDM Agent application on the device.

The device's app assignments are not affected — once the agent is reinstalled, Munki-managed apps will continue to be deployed as configured. Apps already installed are not affected either.

When to use this action

Consider using this action when:

  • Munki-managed app installations are failing or stuck on a device
  • The SimpleMDM Agent is unresponsive or not checking in
  • You need to reset the agent's registration with SimpleMDM
  • Troubleshooting app deployment issues that persist after other remediation steps

Notes

  • This action will not appear unless the device has the SimpleMDM Agent installed and has at least one Munki-deployed app assigned through a group.
  • Any in-progress Munki-managed app installations will be interrupted during the reinstallation process.
