Device Action: Clear Restrictions Password
The Clear Restrictions Password action clears the Screen Time (formerly Restrictions) passcode on a supervised device. This is useful when a device user has set a Screen Time passcode that an admin needs to remove — for example, to reconfigure restrictions or regain full control of a managed device.
Apple documentation for the ClearRestrictionsPassword command can be found here:
Supported platforms
The Clear Restrictions Password action is available for supervised iOS and iPadOS devices running iOS 8.0 or later. The device must be enrolled via device enrollment (not User Enrollment). This action is not available for macOS, tvOS, or visionOS.
How to clear the restrictions password
- In SimpleMDM, navigate to the device's Device Details page.
- Click the "Actions" menu.
- Select "Clear Restrictions Password".
- Confirm the action when prompted.
The Clear Restrictions Password action can also be used as a bulk action from the Devices list. When used as a bulk action, the command is only sent to iOS/iPadOS devices — other device types are skipped automatically.
Behavior by iOS version
The effect of this command depends on the iOS version and Screen Time configuration:
iOS 11 and earlier
Clears the restrictions passcode and all restrictions that the passcode protects.
iOS 12.2 and later
- Screen Time with iCloud sharing enabled (Share Across Devices): Disables Screen Time entirely and clears all its restrictions. The command will fail if the device user is a child in an iCloud family.
- Screen Time without iCloud sharing: Clears the Screen Time passcode only. Screen Time remains enabled and existing restrictions stay in place.
Notes
- This action is different from Clear Passcode, which removes the device's lock screen passcode. Clear Restrictions Password only affects the Screen Time / Restrictions passcode.
