Device Action: Clear Passcode

The Clear Passcode action remotely removes the passcode from a device, allowing the user to access it without entering a passcode. This is commonly used when a user has forgotten their passcode and is locked out of their device.

Apple documentation for the ClearPasscode command can be found here:

Supported platforms

The Clear Passcode action is available for iOS and iPadOS devices enrolled via device enrollment. It is not available for macOS, tvOS, Shared iPad, or devices enrolled via User Enrollment.

How to clear a passcode

  1. In SimpleMDM, navigate to the device's Device Details page.
  2. Click the "Actions" menu.
  3. Select "Clear Passcode".
  4. Confirm the action when prompted.

Once the command is acknowledged, the passcode will be removed from the device. The user can then access the device without a passcode and optionally set a new one.

Notes

  • This action completely removes the passcode from the device — it does not just unlock it. If a passcode policy is assigned to the device, the user will be prompted to set a new passcode.
  • The device must be online to receive the command. If offline, the command will be queued and processed the next time the device checks in.
  • On iOS 16 and later, clearing the passcode no longer adds it to the passcode history. This means the user can reuse the same passcode even if a passcode policy restricts reuse via the passcode history setting.
  • Supervision is not required for this action.
