Device Action: Send Message
The Send Message action delivers a push notification message to a device through the SimpleMDM mobile app. This can be used to communicate with device users directly from the SimpleMDM console — for example, to notify users of upcoming maintenance, policy changes, or other important information.
Supported platforms
The Send Message action is available for iOS and iPadOS devices only. The SimpleMDM app must be installed on the device and must have been opened at least once, with notifications enabled. A Notifications profile can be used to enable these notifications.
How to send a message
From a device's detail page
- In SimpleMDM, navigate to the device's Device Details page.
- Click the "Actions" menu.
- Select "Send Message".
- Enter the message text (up to 255 characters).
- Click "Send" to deliver the message.
From the Devices list (bulk)
- In SimpleMDM, navigate to the Devices list.
- Select one or more devices.
- Click the "Actions" menu.
- Select "Send Message".
- Enter the message text (up to 255 characters).
- Click "Message Devices" to deliver the message.
The message is delivered as a push notification to the SimpleMDM app on each selected device. The device user will see the message as a standard iOS notification.
Prerequisites
- SimpleMDM app installed: The SimpleMDM app must be installed on the device. If the app is not installed, SimpleMDM will display an error when attempting to send a message.
- App opened at least once: The SimpleMDM app must have been launched at least once on the device so it can register for push notifications. If the app has not been started, SimpleMDM will display an error indicating the app hasn't been started.
- Push notifications not blocked: The device user must not have disabled push notifications for the SimpleMDM app. If the user has blocked notifications, SimpleMDM will display an error.
Notes
- This action is not available for macOS, tvOS, or visionOS devices.
- The message is delivered via Apple Push Notification Service (APNs), so the device must be online to receive it. If the device is offline, iOS may deliver the notification when the device reconnects.
- Messages can also be sent in bulk by selecting multiple devices from the Devices list.
