Device Action: Push Assigned Apps and Media
The Push Assigned Apps and Media action sends install commands for all apps and media (books) currently assigned to a device. This includes both auto-deploy items and items configured for manual installation. Use this action when you want to immediately push all assigned content to a device rather than waiting for the next automatic check-in.
Supported platforms
This action is available for iOS, iPadOS, macOS, tvOS, and visionOS devices that are enrolled with app installation capabilities.
How to push assigned apps and media
- In SimpleMDM, navigate to the device's Device Details page.
- Click the "Actions" menu.
- Select "Push Assigned Apps and Media".
SimpleMDM will query the device for its currently installed apps and media, then send install commands for any assigned items that are not yet installed.
What gets pushed
This action pushes all apps and media assigned to the device through its group memberships or direct assignments:
- Apps: All assigned apps, including App Store apps (via Apple Business Manager) and custom/enterprise apps. Both auto-deploy and manually deployed apps are included.
- Media: Assigned books, including Apple Books (via Apple Business Manager) and custom media files. Media installation is available on iOS and iPadOS.
When to use this action
Apps assigned to a device are normally installed automatically when the assignment is created. This action is useful when:
- You've added new apps to a group and want to push them to a specific device right away.
- Apps configured for manual installation need to be pushed to the device.
- A device was offline when apps were originally assigned and you want to push them immediately now that it's back online.
- An app installation previously failed and you want to retry.
Notes
- The device must be online to receive the push. If the device is offline, the install commands will be queued and processed the next time the device checks in.
- SimpleMDM checks which apps are already installed before sending install commands, so apps that are already present on the device will not be re-installed.
- For App Store apps, the device must have sufficient Apple Business Manager (VPP) licenses available for installation to occur without user intervention. If no licenses are available, users will receive a prompt to enter an Apple ID in order to complete the app installation.
